What’s more awkward than middle schoolers introducing themselves on the first day?
Asking them to share a “fun fact” about themselves… and getting crickets. 😅
Here’s a back-to-school icebreaker that flips that moment on its head and actually ends up being surprisingly meaningful:
The Boring Fact Icebreaker
Instead of a “fun fact,” ask each student to share the most boring fact about themselves.
Encourage them to get really mundane:
“Sometimes I blink.”
“I breathe every day.”
“I chew my food.”
“Sometimes I sleep in socks.”
The results? Totally hilarious. Students laugh, relax, and connect right away.
Then, here’s the twist…
After everyone shares, you guide a short reflection discussion:
"A lot of these ‘boring’ things are actually amazing gifts we take for granted, like being able to sleep, breathe, eat. Some people don’t get to do all these things easily. What if we saw those boring things as something to be grateful for?"
It’s funny, thoughtful, and requires zero prep.
