Why The Dragon and the Raven?

G.A. Henty was a war correspondent who wrote over 100 historical novels for young boys. Each is based on rigorous research and immerses the reader in the life and times of the protagonist.

There were many novels we could have chosen as our first to reprint, but The Dragon and the Raven rose to the top quickly. Not many people know about King Alfred and his time period, which is a shame because the man was great in both war and peace. He is not called Alfred the Great for nothing. King Alfred:

  • Could read and write Latin

  • Translated the first 50 Psalms into the Saxon language

  • Organized a defensive network of rotating armies that could respond quickly to Viking raids

  • Set up laws to help govern the nation and worked to increase literacy

The story is a great way to have fun, learn some history, read examples of courage and prudence, and be challenged to think of issues, especially warfare, from a Christian perspective.
