Inspiration for Workhorses

I worked a lot in college. My FAFSA loans provided a stipend for books and other expenses, but I had rent to pay. At one point I had three part-time jobs on top of a full academic schedule.

One of those jobs was mucking stalls at the fairgrounds every Sunday. I found the listing on Craigslist. It was the type of job where if you showed up you got paid. We’d start at 6PM and stay until the work was done. Some nights only lasted an hour or two, others stretched on into the darkness.

One long night, the boss’ wife stopped by sometime after midnight. Chatting with a worker she said, “You’re either a workhorse or a show pony. My husband is a workhorse.”
