What teachers say about the transferable skills guide
Using the guide really made me see how wide and varied my skills are. It wasn’t until I stood back and took stock of everything I do, and have done throughout my career, that I realised just how many transferable skills I have.
The guide helped me recognise how those skills can be clearly articulated and confidently applied in roles beyond teaching, and as a result I was successful in securing a job outside of education as a manager at the Department for Work and Pensions.

A very guide good. Definitely opened my eyes to what skills we actually have as teachers.

My story
I reached burnout in 2015 after years of weekends and school holidays spent on school trips, no breaks, and zero life outside work. I remember sitting in my classroom after the first CPD day of the year, listening to a “motivational” talk about results, and just bursting into tears.
I couldn’t do it anymore.
So I did the sensible thing (heavy sarcasm coming) and booked a one-way ticket to Australia.
I nannied. I worked in a wildlife park. I panicked.
And six months later… I was back in the classroom. Still exhausted, still overwhelmed, still stressed.
It took me two years to figure out how to leave teaching properly, without a pay cut, and into a job that respected me, inspired me, and gave me lunch breaks, actual annual leave and my life back. My whole body relaxed. I could breathe again.
There is nothing special about me.
If I can make this change, so can you.
And this skills guide is the first step I wish I’d had back then.
