What is money trauma?
Money trauma isn’t just “being bad with money.”
It’s when past stressful or painful experiences around money (scarcity, debt, instability, family conflict, etc.) shape your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in ways that feel hard to control.
Emotional Symptoms
Constant anxiety about money (even when you’re okay financially)
Guilt or shame when spending—even on necessities
Feeling “never safe” financially, no matter how much you have
Panic when checking your bank account
Envy or resentment toward people who seem financially stable
Behavioral Patterns
Avoiding looking at your finances (accounts, bills, debt)
Impulse spending → followed by regret or shame
Extreme frugality or hoarding money (fear of losing it)
Overworking or burnout to feel financially “secure”
Self-sabotaging income opportunities (undercharging, not negotiating)
Thought Patterns
“I’ll never have enough money”
“I don’t deserve to have money”
“If I spend this, something bad will happen”
“People will judge me if they know my financial situation”
All-or-nothing thinking (either broke or rich, nothing in between)
Relationship Symptoms
Conflict with partners/family about money
Hiding purchases or financial information
Fear of depending on others financially
Staying in unhealthy jobs or relationships for financial security
Nervous System Responses
Stress or tightness in your body when thinking about money
Trouble sleeping due to financial worries
Fight/flight responses triggered by bills, debt, or financial decisions
