A festival hosted by the African American Studies Institute at PGCC and OurSpace World, Inc. happening October 6-7, 2023!  Peeking into the future of food sovereignty for the black community.

Our Mission

Food insecurity is a nationwide problem. It is our hope that through the Black Food, Black Futures Festival, we can create a space in which additional light can be shed on people and institutions in our local community who work to solve this problem. There is a resilience in the food culture created by our ancestors, which should be honored and celebrated by those of us in the Black community. As the problem of food insecurity continues, our cultural legacies of growing food, cooking, gathering, and eating can neither be preserved nor expanded upon.

It may not be obvious to many, but this potential loss of cultural heritage and the immediate struggles with hunger affect the Prince George's County in significant ways. The county was once prized as the wealthiest black county in the U.S., which may have overshadowed the food insecurity experienced by many who live here. How can 'Black excellence' be expected from those working on an empty stomach? Not only is there a threat at a basic human needs level- the loss of all forms of cultural vibrancy in PG County (and beyond) are at stake. This will not be solved in a day, but it is our hope that through this Festival, we can celebrate, preserve, nourish, and spread awareness
