Two multi-translated novelists and one translator will discuss the vagaries of translation for foreign markets: how a translator works, how and where translations are sold, advances and royalties, capturing and respecting author styles, joys and problems of translation, and title and cover changes. We will talk about the famous annual Frankfurt Book Fair where translations have been sold for 500 years. With host Stephanie Cowell, novelists Leslie Carroll and Jeanne Mackin, and Polish translator Sean Gasper Bye.

About the Panelists:
Sean Gasper Bye is a translator from Polish. Sean began learning Polish at university as a way of reconnecting with his roots. He fell in love with Polish literature, and has been translating it since 2012. He focuses on contemporary fiction and reportage, and also works with historical texts, theater, and video games. Book translations include Mikołaj Grynberg’s Confidential, Szczepan Twardoch’s The King of Warsaw, Małgorzata Szejnert’s Ellis Island: A People’s History, and others. His translations have won the EBRD Literary Prize and the Asymptote Close Approximations Prize; and been shortlisted for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, a National Jewish Book Award, the Sami Rohr Prize, and the National Translation Award. Jeanne Mackin’s latest novel, Picasso’s Lovers, from Berkley, has been published in six languages. Previous novels include The Last Collection, The Frenchwoman, The Queen’s War, Dreams of Empire, The Sweet By and By, The Beautiful American, and A Lady of Good Family. Her non-fiction includes The Cornell Book of Herbs. Leslie Carroll is the author of twenty-two books in three genres: women’s fiction; historical nonfiction; and historical fiction under the pen names of Amanda Elyot and Juliet Grey. She is also a professional actress and an award-winning audiobook narrator. Her novels have been translated into several languages and optioned for film and television. Stephanie Cowell has been an opera singer, balladeer, founder of Strawberry Opera and other arts venues. She is the author of Nicholas Cooke, The Physician of London, The Players: a novel of the young Shakespeare, Marrying Mozart, Claude & Camille: a novel of Monet, The Boy in the Rain and The Man in the Stone Cottage (a novel of the Brontë sisters).
