De blauwvintonijn (𝘛𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘴) is terug in de Noordzee. In het Nederlandse deel is de vangstkans nog niet heel groot, maar langs de kusten van Ierland, Denemarken en Noorwegen is deze toppredator terug van weggeweest.
We zijn bijna vergeten dat Nederlandse vissers rond 1900 klaagden over tonijnen die makreel en haring roofden. En dat Duitse vissers rond 1950 op de Doggersbank regelmatig exemplaren vingen van ruim 200 kilo. Door ongereguleerde commerciële visserij was de blauwvintonijn rond 1970 uit de Noordzee en de noordelijke wateren verdwenen.
Door internationale bescherming en strengere quota is het tij gekeerd. Sinds 2012 duikt de blauwvin steeds vaker op in de wateren rond Ierland, Denemarken en de fjorden van Noorwegen. Ook zijn er in 2023 twee jagende tonijnen gespot voor de monding van de Westerschelde.
𝗢𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘇𝗼𝗲𝗸 𝗻𝗮𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘂𝘄𝘃𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗷𝗻 🔬
De afgelopen jaren zijn tientallen blauwvintonijnen van merkjes en zenders voorzien. Daarbij werken sportvissers en onderzoekers samen om blauwvintonijnen te vangen, te taggen en zo snel mogelijk weer los te laten. Dat onderzoek levert inmiddels een schat aan gegevens op.
1️⃣ Zo reisden zestien tonijnen die bij Noorwegen waren gemerkt in een jaar tijd van de Noorse poolcirkel naar wateren voor de kust van Amerika en richting de Canarische eilanden bij Afrika.
2️⃣ Een aantal vissen bezocht de bekende paaigronden bij Mallorca in de Middellandse Zee.
3️⃣ Vergelijkbaar onderzoek dat eerder in Deense wateren plaatsvond laat hetzelfde trekpatroon zien, waarbij een aantal tonijnen ook het noordelijke deel van onze Noordzee verkenden.
𝗞𝘄𝗲𝘁𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗮𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗷
👉 Dit trekgedrag richting jachtgronden die duizenden kilometers uit elkaar liggen maakt deze soort volgens onderzoekers kwetsbaar voor lokale visserij.
👉 Dat is waarschijnlijk de reden dat onbeperkte vangst van langstrekkende scholen in Deense en Noorse kustwateren de blauwvin in de jaren ’60 de das om deed.
👉 Onderzoekers waarschuwen daarom dat we vooral voorzichtig moeten zijn met plannen voor het heropenen van de commerciële visserij op deze unieke toppredator.
