Bridging the Gap: From Knowing to Doing
A Workshop for English Teachers
By Sérgio Pantoja and Lívia Borba
Just getting students to speak isn’t always enough.
If the goal is to help them become more fluent and accurate, we need to think about how they're speaking—and what they’re learning from it. Speaking for the sake of speaking won’t do the trick on its own.
In this workshop, we’ll look at ways to make output more meaningful, so that learners don’t just speak—they grow.
We’ll dive into Merrill Swain’s Output Hypothesis to explore how speaking and writing can:
Help learners notice what they don’t yet know
Give them a chance to try things out and see what works
Get them thinking about how the language actually works
