Building Connections, Strengthening Community
Tammy Ward
NEWESD 101's 2024 Regional Classified School Employee of the Year
Tammy Ward is the heart of the Mary Walker School District, where she has dedicated over two decades of service to her community. From greeting students each day to managing the intricate details of school operations, Tammy’s influence can be felt at every level. “I love what I do and our community,” she says, reflecting on her 21-year career. Her journey began as a substitute teacher in the early 1990s, and she soon became a fixture in the district, serving as the K-8 office manager for 20 years.
In her current role as District Secretarial/Student Programs Coordinator, Tammy oversees a variety of responsibilities, from leading building secretaries, overseeing accounts receivable/accounts payable to coordinating transportation and athletic programs. "One of the most important parts of my job always has been and always will be relationships," Tammy shares. “I personally feel it is imperative for every staff member, parent and student to know they are important and valued.”
Her personal connection to the community runs deep, as Tammy herself attended Mary Walker as a kindergartner. Her colleagues and supervisors speak highly of her dedication. Superintendent Todd Spear notes, “Tammy is the pillar of support for our district. Her positive and enthusiastic approach to change showcases her unwavering commitment.” Even when she had to transition from her beloved K-8 office role to a district-wide position, Tammy embraced the change, focusing on the broader impact she could have on the school community.
Tammy's impact goes beyond her daily duties. She is deeply involved in the community, volunteering for local programs and supporting athletic events. She has been instrumental in key initiatives, such as the district’s student improvement planning team, where she worked to boost student success through increased attendance and academic support.
Former student Kimberly Nolan recalls Tammy's support during a challenging time in her life, sharing, "Tammy was always there for me, whether it was offering advice, helping with schoolwork, or simply providing a safe space when I needed it most." It’s clear that Tammy’s influence extends far beyond the walls of Mary Walker School District — she’s an advocate, mentor and friend to many.
For Tammy, her work is not just a job — it’s a lifelong commitment to the students, families, and staff she serves. It’s this dedication and passion that earned her the well-deserved honor of being named NEWESD 101’s 2024 Regional Classified Employee of the Year.
Overseen by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), the Regional Classified School Employee of the Year program recognizes the exceptional work of public-school employees.
Winners are selected by a committee based on nominations from peers, supervisors, students and parents received by a regional coordinator at each of the state’s nine ESDs.
While contending for the title of State Classified Employee of the Year, regional winners engage in year-long professional learning, leadership and advocacy training, and meet with state and national education leaders.
