...and you just freeze…
You think, “how can I help them with this? I wasn’t trained in this. It’s not my specialty. And I haven’t even figured out my own eating issues yet."
Most of us aren’t trained in disordered eating. And even more importantly, we’ve been just as impacted by diet culture as our clients. The constant pressure on our appearance, never feeling good enough, feeling like we can’t trust ourselves with food. We experience all of that too.
How can we help our clients when we haven’t figured out how to help ourselves?
We do our own work while we're learning how to help our clients do theirs. And we do it in a supportive setting alongside other therapists and practitioners.
This six-week Master Class will guide you toward a greater understanding of utilizing the IFS model with clients struggling with food and body concerns. By attending this Master Class, you will feel confident in approaching the following concerns brought by your clients:
The Master Class will also provide you with the opportunity to explore your own Eating System and notice your own parts' relationship with food and your body. We'll also focus on noticing the parts that tend to blend with you during sessions with your clients, and you'll leave the class feeling better able to maintain Self-Energy during your sessions.
The group will meet every other week for two hours. The first hour will be dedicated to didactic training that will focus on topics specific to this work (see the Curriculum below).
In the second hour, we'll engage in active learning activities to deepen your working understanding of the material and learn more about your own system. We'll be engaging in such activities as:
Eating Systems
This week, we’ll focus on the Eating System (this is the subsystem that contains any and all parts related to food and body). You’ll be learning about common characteristics and common parts. You’ll begin getting to know your own System as well as learning skills to help your clients understand their System.
Therapeutic Goals
The goals of this work are the focus for week two. Since our clients' goals tend to be parts-driven, we’ll be discussing how to get buy-in from our clients to work toward a Self-led system. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the parts of you that may blend with you during sessions with clients.
Working with Polarizations
Eating Systems tend to contain a lot of polarizations, so this week we’ll be focusing on how to recognize and work with them effectively. You’ll also have the opportunity to notice the polarizations within your own system.
Cultural and Legacy Burdens
In this week, we’ll be looking at how to help our clients notice the Cultural and Legacy Burdens that they carry and how to unburden them. We will, of course, look at the burdens we carry as well.
Negative Body Image
Because negative feelings toward the body are at the root of so many eating issues, we’ll be focusing on how to help our clients connect to and develop a compassionate relationship with their bodies. And of course, we’ll be noticing our own relationship with our bodies as well.
Self-led and Intuitive Eating
Self-led Eating is our ultimate goal with clients (and for ourselves), and this week we’ll be talking about what that looks like and how to get there. We'll throw a little Intuitive Eating in there too. We'll finish out with a discussion on the challenges of this work as well as noticing growth edges.

I'm Kim Daniels (she/her/hers), and I'm a Clinical Psychologist, Certified Level 2 trained IFS Therapist, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Emotional Eating Coach, and host of the "Emotional Eating (and Everything Else) Podcast" who's been working with folx who struggle with eating and body image issues for over 20 years.
And I work with therapists and other practitioners to help them examine their own relationship with food and their bodies. Because let's face it--being a practitioner doesn't make us immune to the influence of diet culture. And it's easy to be triggered by our clients' talking about their own diet attempts and their feelings about their body.
I've been working with people struggling with food issues for over 20 years, and I've made a lot of mistakes. Let me help you avoid all of that!
