If you are struggling with difficulties with your mental health, I can help. I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) therapist and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) practitioner, accredited by the BABCP and a member of the EMDR Association UK.
CBT & EMDR are evidence-based therapies shown to be successful to support recovery of many common mental health difficulties such as: depression, PTSD and anxiety disorders such as; OCD, Social Anxiety, Agoraphobia, GAD and phobias. So if you are experiencing these types of problems, they impact on your life and you want to make positive changes to feel better, why not reach out to me. Together we can work towards achieving positive mental health, which you deserve.
I acknowledge accessing therapy may feel overwhelming, so I work compassionately to build a warm and secure working relationship to achieve wellness. I work flexibly, collaboratively and creatively, tailoring therapy to meet your needs for best chance of recovery.
I believe everyone has a right to positive mental health. This lead to the development of my private, virtual practice. I provide fast access to therapy at times when you need it the most, ensuring you don’t face long waiting lists. I work internationally, ensuring location isn't a barrier to treatment.
My career began in custodial settings and has since spanned over 15 years in the NHS and private online services. I also supervise therapeutic teams and have a special interest in supporting 'expat' and military families, drawing from my own experiences.
Let’s work together towards your mental health and recovery! I hope to hear from you.
* CBT is an evidence-based form of talking therapy endorsed by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for its effectiveness in treating common mental health challenges such as depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and anxiety disorders such as: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), social anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), health anxiety.
* CBT sessions are collaborative and practical, focusing on understanding and addressing the interconnectedness of situations, thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviour.
* CBT is goal-oriented, designed to deliver significant improvements in functioning and quality of life, equips individuals with techniques to create positive changes to their mental health and empowers individuals to become their own therapists.
* Therapy is typically structured over 14-18 sessions, lasting 50 minutes each (although session length may vary based on individual needs).
* EMDR is a groundbreaking therapy approach designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories of PTSD such as: war-related experiences, childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect, natural disaster, assault, surgical trauma, birth trauma, road traffic accidents and workplace accidents.
* Since its original development, EMDR is also increasingly used to help individuals with other issues including phobias, anxiety, pain management and depression.
* EMDR has also been found to be of benefit to clients with language barriers or those that can’t give details of the trauma.
* EMDR is endorsed by many leading organizations such as; the American Psychological Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and EMDR Association UK.
* EMDR facilitates the processing of frozen or blocked memories in the information processing system by engaging bilateral stimulation, typically through side-to-side eye movements or taps. This method is believed to replicate the naturally occurring function during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep which naturally processes experiences.
* EMDR unlocks the brain's natural healing ability, allowing clients to process distressing memories. This reduces its emotional charge and integrates these experiences in a healthier way to obtain relief from the burdens of unresolved trauma.
* Therapy is typically structured over 14-20 sessions, lasting 60-90 minutes each (although session length may vary based on individual needs).
Initial Assessment
* We will arrange an initial assessment at a convenient time to you before we contract to a therapy treatment plan. Usually, this session will be completed in a 90 minute session. However, initial assessments can take more than one session before a treatment plan is created.
* Initial assessments are a great way for us to develop an understanding of your current mental health difficulties and what factors are maintaining the problem and most importantly, identify the area you would like to target to work on in therapy.
* You don't need to worry about what to say, as you will be led by the psychotherapist. We will use a variety of planned, structured discussions and questionnaires to identify the target for treatment and your therapy goals.
* I will ensure that my skills as a psychotherapist in CBT and EMDR are the right match for your treatment needs. If this is the case, and you would also like to work with me, then we will consider a treatment plan.
Therapy treatment:
* The usual duration of each treatment session is 50 minutes for CBT and 60-90 minutes for EMDR, although these may be amended for therapeutic reasons.
* Therapy is usually delivered over 12-16 sessions. However, we may need less, or require more sessions, based on the individual presentation. I would usually consider reviewing how treatment is going at around session 6 to ensure it continues to feel like a suitable option.
* Treatment will vary, depending on the target area we have agreed to work on. However sessions will usually follow a similar pattern of agenda setting, a brief check in with how you are, review of questionnaires, review of any home tasks set between sessions, reflection on the formulation and testing out new skills, agree on home practice tasks for that week and a summary of the session.
Kat Cuthbert Psychotherapy also provides to therapeutic teams who want to support staff morale, wellbeing and team connectedness. Clinical supervision enables individuals to overcome barriers and problems within their working environment and work cohesively towards the service’s main goal, improves work place satisfaction and helps maintain staff retention.

"I would recommend Kat as a supervisor. She is warm and empathetic and really listens to how you are feeling. The space given for reflection is really helpful to speak confidently about any areas in the workplace which has stayed with you due to own personal triggers. It is also a great space to offload external life pressures also so that you are not taking them into work, potentially affecting patient care."
"I instantly felt relaxed and comfortable with Kat. I did not feel any threat in terms of power dynamics and I felt cared for when speaking around sensitive areas which had affected me at work. I also like the supervision was seperate to the company itself. This helps to disconnect the relationship between work and supervision allowing for a more open conversation because you do not feel a concern that what you are saying could offend, upset or cause friction in the workplace because the relationships were separate and held no connection."
"Kat was professional and approachable. She was able to give me space to process what I needed to. Sessions are always helpful and I would recommend it to others."
