What is the Latent Phase of Labour?

The latent (or early) phase is the very first stage of labour - when your body is gently preparing for birth. It can last hours (or even a day or two), with mild contractions that may come and go and be different in length and strength.  You may feel sick and have an upset stomach - all signs that labour may be beginning.

This phase is totally normal — but how you respond to it can make a big difference.

Many parents feel unsure in this phase:
“Is this it?” “Should I go to hospital yet?” “What if I’m not doing it right?”

That’s why this checklist is such a powerful tool.

It helps you:

🌿 Understand what’s happening in your body
🌿 Know what’s normal and when to call for support
🌿 Stay home and calm as long as possible to keep oxytocin flowing
🌿 Avoid unnecessary stress or interventions
