I used to be a painfully shy, highly sensitive introvert, with a constant background feeling of social anxiety.
I felt nervous and tired, but I thought "This is what life feels like".
I used to get overwhelmed when I needed to do a presentation at work.
As a people pleaser, I struggled to speak up to express my own opinion or even admit my own needs.
And, as a painfully shy introvert, I felt incredibly self-conscious in social situations.
At the age of 18 I made the decision to overcome my shyness. Over many years I have taken so many steps to learn skills and strategies to feel more calm, and less stressed and self-conscious, to make friends with strangers, and ultimately to find my voice.
I went to silent retreats, invested in courses on meditation and
personal transformation, studied psychology and theology at uni and joined group and personal spiritual direction and coaching.
When I was a Children & Family Worker, I would run our annual Christmas Eve service. It was full-on. The church was packed with parents and over-excited children. And I'd feel so overwhelmed that I didn't really enjoy it.
The year I learned the first step in what's now my "Tame your Trigger process" was the first year I felt relaxed and actually enjoyed running the service.
Wow! I knew this was the start of something exciting!
