ABOUT US
What is the North East Anti-Racism Coalition?
The North East Anti-Racism Coalition (NEARC) is a recently established organisation. Our vision is of a North East that actively opposes racism and religious hatred — a region where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is the norm, and everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. *.
* As well as our plans, our language, is still evolving.
Taking action NOW to create lasting impact will lead to a fairer and more inclusive world for us and future generations.
Where did it all start?
A small group of us came together following the violent riots in the Summer of 2024. With a real drive to see change, we organised a meeting to talk to others about what change was needed, and how we could work together, as a region, to achieve it.
We now have over 200 people on our mailing list and have held 3 events across the North East – in Newcastle, Darlington and Middlesbrough. These have grown from around 30 people to over 80 - and we want to see this continue. We are passionate about making change, but we can't do it alone. We need people around our region to help us, which is where you come in. Together we can bring about meaningful and lasting change.
Why we came together
Systemic inequities persist in our society for people of colour and people that experience hate, such as health, education, and criminal justice.
These inequities are sometimes difficult to see/believe if we do not experience them ourselves.
Challenging the status quo is not new, however the stop/start approach we are used to means that the battle for inclusion has never been won.
The racist and anti-Muslim hate riots of the summer are a powerful reminder of how much more work there is to do.
Our Aim.
To work together to help develop an anti-racist, anti-Muslim hatred and anti-hatred North East, through developing clear, authentic actions across six themes:
1) Meaningful engagement and commitment from individuals and organisations across all sectors
2) Learning and education underpinned by …
3) Community engagement with all voices heard
4) Inclusive leadership and accountability
5) Greater diversity and representation across our region
6) Improved and inclusive Communications
Our Ask.
Please:
Join our movement if you share our ambition to create an anti-racist, anti-Muslim hatred and anti-hate region.
We would welcome any skills and experience that you’re willing to share.
Help us and our future generations by being an advocate and champion, sharing the word about this movement and engaging with our activities as they take shape.
