Real Talk

It started with zinc oxide and way too many open tabs.

I was on a film shoot in the middle of nowhere slathered in so much white sunblock I looked like an Australian wilderness guide.

Even though the zinc oxide was seriously stinging my eyes I couldn’t let myself tear up because 150 crew members were watching me waiting for their marching orders. Everybody expected me to be the with-it screenwriter/producer who always knew what to do, so that’s the role I played. But deep down I always felt like a fake.

I had a to-do list a mile long for the film shoot I was currently working on, and somehow I always managed to tick off every box by the end of the day. Catch is: I also had a secret to-do list on my laptop that had sat there untouched forever.

The Secret List

This secret to-do list said in bold letters, "Work On Imposter Syndrome." Beneath this were a bunch of ideas like "therapy?" "affirmations?" "hire a life coach?" "meditate?" But not a single one of those boxes was checked off.

I knew imposter syndrome was getting in my way, but every single thing the internet told me to do about it sounded like a chore that I seriously didn't have time for. Heck, the guilt I had around not working on my imposter syndrome was making my imposter syndrome worse.

The Magic Shift

But something shifted on that day with sunscreen stinging my eyes and a film crew springing to life around me. That's when I got the idea to write my very first self-talk scripts, and suddenly it felt like I was making headway on my secret to-do list.

Suddenly, I had a clear way forward. Suddenly, I felt a sense of relief and an instant mental load off. The best part: this new tool was simple enough to use while I was making my coffee or scrubbing sunscreen out of my eyes at night.
