Why hybrid schooling is the future of secondary education

As schools grapple with the challenges of serving diverse student needs within tight budgetary constraints, hybrid schooling is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional schooling. This report explores what this shift means for the future of education.

The traditional model for secondary schooling is under pressure.

A national teacher shortage and rising operational costs are placing unprecedented strain on UK schools. At the same time, teacher well-being is at an all-time low, students are disengaging from learning, and parents are losing faith in a system they once trusted.

Although policymakers have made tentative steps to address these issues, meeting the diverse needs of today’s students requires a bolder approach. One which combines the benefits of in-person education with the personalisation of digital learning.

Drawing on the insightful discussions that took place at Reimagining Secondary Schooling 2026, this report explores the challenges and opportunities of hybrid learning, offering an insight into what this shift means for the future of secondary education.
