What are Phonological Processes?

Phonological processes are patterns of sound errors that typically developing children use to simplify speech as they are learning to talk. 

A phonological disorder occurs when phonological processes persist beyond the age when most typically developing children have stopped using them or when the processes used are much different than what would be expected.

Age of Elimination

The age at which phonological processes are eliminated is a one year range. For example if the age of elimination is 5, the child has until 5 years 11 months to eliminate the process. Therefore, active phonological processes are not recommended to be targeted in therapy until one year following the age of elimination.

The ages at which phonological processes are eliminated are highly variable among children. As a result the age of elimination should be used as a reference only when considering the need for intervention.
