The Gargoyles of York - a new children's book series and art project

Find out more and help me bring these stories to life...

High above the city, carved in stone, York’s gargoyles have watched for centuries. But what if they weren’t just statues? What if they could think, sneak off their perches, and explore the city?

The Gargoyles of York is a brand-new children's book series and art project by Nikki Spalding (that’s me!). Through heart-warming adventure and humour, I’m bringing these ancient guardians to life—celebrating York’s rich history, culture, and untold stories.

A GARGOYLES OF YORK ADVENTURE:

Quinn Takes Flight

High above York Minster, Quinn is a young gargoyle with one smaller wing who dreams of exploring the world below. While other gargoyles obey strict rules to remain still and hidden from humans, ten-year-old Quinn yearns for adventure.

His world changes when he's spotted by Lilly, a girl with a little arm who, like Quinn, feels different and often stands alone. On his birthday, Quinn takes a daring first flight down to the city streets where he and Lilly meet by chance.

Together, they embark on an adventure through York—walking the city walls, splashing in puddles, and riding a merry-go-round. In the day's most magical moment, they both shed their coverings—Quinn's wing-hiding scarf and Lilly's concealing cape—embracing their true selves.

Through their friendship, Lilly finds new confidence while Quinn discovers his purpose: breaking rules can be wonderful when it means helping others. As he returns to his perch with fresh eyes, Quinn knows this is just the beginning of his journey as York's most unusual gargoyle.

ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Nikki...

I'm an artist, storyteller, and creator of The Gargoyles of York, a whimsical children’s book series and art project that brings the city’s stone guardians to life. I first moved to York as a student when I was 18, and the city’s rich history, culture and stunning architecture have always captivated me. More recently, I started wondering: What if the Minster gargoyles had a life of their own? That question led to the creation of both my art series and my first early chapter book, Quinn Takes Flight, which is inspired by my own experiences living with a limb difference.

In addition to my artistic pursuits, I work in the higher education sector, and I teach martial arts-inspired fitness classes. Outside of work, you’ll find me gardening, reading (I still have all my childhood books!), or enjoying live music. I also love spending time with my little dog, Cookie, who should probably feature in a story one day.

If you have an idea for how we might collaborate, or if you’d like to share my book with a child and give me feedback, I’d love to hear from you.
