What if
you never rushed a dance performance again? What if you could stay on the beat no matter how nervous you are, if you weren't about missing your musical cues, confidently entering and exiting the stage on the music even in complex group choreographies?
You could feel calm, joyful and supported by the music when you’re improvising.
Instead of desperately counting the beat in your head and somehow still speeding up or missing your cue, you could flow with the music with ease, directing your attention to the emotions you want to project, to your connection with your group and with the audience - and to enjoying your time on stage!
Inside the rhythm is for you:
If you want your music to feel like a rock solid foundation for your dance instead of a ground of quicksand where you can flounder and sink if your attention wanders for a moment;
if you want to understand and embody the rhythm, be it a simple pop song or a complex muwashah;
if you want to be able to capture and dance to these rhythms in a few moments’ notice as the music changes and dance to them; if you want to improvise so in sync with the music that your audience wonders if you’re dancing choreography;
… and if you have all this and want to be able to transmit it to your students.
Hi! I’m Eszter-Maura.
I call myself a belly dancer - but for the last 30 years (and more), I’ve explored a wide range of dance styles and music genres from different traditions all over the world, acquiring a deep and comprehensive understanding of rhythm and movement in the process.
Having witnessed the struggle of my peers and the transformation in some (but not in others) firsthand, I developed first a curiosity, then a passion for helping dancers develop their musicality and connection to the music.
I’ve studied and adapted methods of my own foundational musical education, tailoring them to benefit adult dancers, ensuring that anyone can develop a strong sense of rhythm and musical foundation for their dance.
What is this class about?
Inside the rhythm is my brand new, innovative 4-week course developed to help you acquire the musicality you need to become the dancer you dream of - and transmit it to your students in clear terms, actionable steps and effective practices.
The course is aimed at building up the very core of all musicality: your sense of rhythm. It’s packed with exercises to use yourself to improve your sense of rhythm, or to use in your classes to help your students with the same.
Improving your musicality and your sense of rhythm is not the same process as learning dance technique or choreography, or even learning about the specifics of Middle-Eastern music and rhythms.
This programme is the only one in existence that offers the sort of specific, targeted practice you need to be truly secure in the music, and that (for lack of time, knowledge or preference) you can’t always get - or teach - in weekly dance classes.
In this programme, you won’t need to memorise sequences or struggle with complicated moves distracting you from the music itself. Nor will you get boggled down with specific rhythms of one style or another: the exercises will help you embody any style, any genre of music.
While understanding musical concepts is an important part of musicality, embodying rhythm is about consistent practice, not just study. In this programme, we’ll begin with the basics and progressively build your skills, one bite-sized exercise at a time. Plus, you’ll join a supportive community that encourages you and keeps you accountable every step of the way.
What you get:
simple, bite-sized exercises every weekday that you can easily fit into your daily routine, no special clothing or equipment needed
easy-to-understand explanations of musical concepts
two live sessions for Q&A and guided live practice
community and support
Who is this for?
The programme is for you if you are
an enthusiastic dance student of any level and you
want to progress quicker in your dance studies by being able to truly concentrate on mastering the moves and choreographies in class instead of worrying about keeping up with the music,
want to start to enjoy performing, concentrating on the dance itself, on expressing yourself and on connecting with the audience (instead of counting the beat in your head and worrying about whether you’ll rush the dance again)
want to start creating your own dances and/or start dancing on something else than simple pop songs
want to dance with finger cymbals or frame drums; or
a dance teacher who wants to teach well-rounded students with good musicality, but
you think sense of ryhthm can’t be taught and feel bad for the students who just “don’t have it”,
your students dance beautifully but are too busy counting to enjoy the dance, and speed up the moment you put them on stage, or worse, freeze the moment you don’t dance with them
you have musical talent but find it next to impossible to explain why certain moves fall where they do, can’t count it for your students and end up saying “just feel it”, frustrating them (and yourself) in the process.
With the help of the programme, you’ll be able to
securely embody the beat,
keep up with the meter without having to count in your head,
analyse, understand and follow different rhythms,
distinguish and follow the rhythmic patterns of different parts/voices in the music, and
as a teacher, have a clear and effective system to help your students witht the same.
By the time the Christmas haflas roll around, you’ll wow your audience at the with your self-assurance and your effortless flow with the music. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy being on stage, captivating the public with your vibrant stage presence!

I don’t know any music theory, is that an issue?
Not at all! You don’t need to know any music theory to join the class.
Is this a Middle-Eastern rhythms class?
Nope! This course is aimed at helping you improve your sense of rhythm and teaching you related musical concepts that can be used to analyse, understand, embody, and dance to, any sort of music.
Since we’ll use quite a bit of Middle-Eastern music, we’ll briefly discuss iqa’at (Middle-Eastern rhythms), but they aren’t the main focus of the course.
I literally don’t have a sense of rhythm, will this class help me?
Absolutely! Your sense of rhyhtm is in fact more a set of skills you can learn, improve and practice than a mystical inborn talent (even if genetics and family culture may give you a stroke of good luck). We’ll start at the basics and work our way through towards more complex musical concepts and practices. You’ll also have access to your classes at least until Dec 31 2024, so you can review all the material as you wish.
I’m not a belly dancer, can I still join?
YES!
This programme aims to help all dancers improve their sense of rhythm. For most of the practices, we’ll use either simple moves like steps and clapping, or basic bely dance / raqs sharqi moves such as hip drops, omis and shoulder accents. If you come from another dance style, you can always use with the basics of your own dance style: it isn't about the technique, it’s about the music and the rhythm.

How many times per week are we expected to practice, and how long?
You’ll receive a short practice video of 5-10 minutes every weekday during the four weeks of the challenge, building on one another. It is recommended that you practice at least 5 minutes per day, and that you repeat the exercises that prove to be difficult for you.
