When we engage in Tuning, we open our creative perception to multiple senses, allowing movement, drawing, and visual inquiry to emerge together.
Integrating mark-making and amplified image practices has expanded the possibilities of composition.
Through the Tuning Traces ensemble, these explorations culminate in a collaborative performance that demonstrates the collective power and meaning-making of the practice.
ABOUT TUNING TRACES MADBROOK
What is Tuning?

Tuning Scores are sense-based compositional exercises developed by Lisa Nelson.
Tuning Scores reveal the elements of composition through immediate feedback. As participants observe and respond to one another’s movements with verbal cues like “pause,” “repeat,” and “replace,” the work unfolds collectively.
The Tuning Traces project integrates movement and drawing into a public performance that demonstrates the possibilities of Tuning as an interdisciplinary, experimental practice.
Past Tuning Projects

Over years of collaborative practice, projects such as Tuning4Armageddon and Tuning Traces have brought together multi-racial, intergenerational artists, integrating movement, drawing, improvisation, and visual inquiry into collective, experimental performance.
This ongoing practice contributes to the cultural legacy of Tuning Scores while culminating in audience-facing presentations.
Our 2026 Performance

In April 2026, Bay Area BIPOC Tuning artists will gather in Madbrook, Vermont with Lisa Nelson and margit Galanter to refine their practice of Tuning Scores.
This gathering culminates in a public performance on April 9, 2026, presenting the integration of movement, drawing, and visual composition.
The artists will explore the relationships between aesthetics, movement, and visual practice, demonstrating how improvisational composition can be fully realized as a performable work.
This performance also honors the guidance and inspiration of past collaborators, including Jubilee July, Kevin C. Lo, Ainsley Tharp, Frances Rosario, and James-Amutabi Connie Haines.

COMMUNITY IMPACT
Our performance April 9th, 2026 in Madbrook, VT expands the cultural and artistic legacy of Tuning Scores by demonstrating how movement, perception, and visual practice co-emerge in a completed, public-facing work. Audience members will witness the unfolding of improvisational composition, offering insight into collective artistic inquiry.
The project also strengthens a network of BIPOC artists in experimental performance, supporting teaching, collaboration, and continued creative exchange beyond the residency.
