Vocal Lessons

Lesson Focuses:

  1. Vocal technique: training a solid technical foundation for injury prevention and the development of vocal freedom that spans many styles of music.

  2. Aural Training: training the ear to learn music aurally; developing long-term musical memory.

  3. Sight-singing: training to read melodies from sheet music without using an instrument. I have a background in fixed-do solfège that is very useful for learning tonal and atonal melodies.

  4. Lyrical Interpretation: training in diction, phrasing, artistic interpretation of lyrics, and vowel modification/ proficiency.

  5. Vocal Registers: training targeted warmups for the chest, head, and mix registers; help with discovering those registers in your unique voice; finding freedom transitioning between those registers in performance.

  6. Vocal Agility: training in singing melismas and fast lines without tension.

  7. Lyric Writing: training in putting lyrics to already existing tunes and in the context of songwriting (for those who are interested). I also teach guitar for those who want to apply a harmonic instrument to their songwriting.

  8. Vibrato: training in how to artistically apply vibrato in performance and how to use different forms of vibrato interchangeably

  9. Harmony Singing: training in how to complement another singer by learning and improvising harmony lines; training in understanding harmonic structures (chords and chord progressions) and how to respond to them as a vocalist.

Jazz Voice:

The study of jazz voice creates a skill set that I believe is widely applicable and very helpful l when approaching music that is outside that discipline.

  1. Jazz Repertoire: training in jazz repertoire that spans many styles within jazz.

  2. Jazz Improvisation: training on how to use the voice to improvise new melodies (scatting) and embellish existing ones; help transcribing improvisational solos using notation and/or by ear. (the technique of improvisation can also be applied to genres outside jazz)

  3. Collaborative Skills: training on how to be a band leader and how to prepare to work with instrumentalists. Examples include: picking keys to suit your voice, arranging tunes, communicating feel, and responding to musical ideas.

Lastly, my goal for these lessons is to support you, your unique voice, and your musical interests!
