What my readers say about Becoming the Leader You Already Are

'I love what you have developed. It really speaks to me, the small shifts in thinking and behaviour that lead to bigger change as we navigate the leadership journey. I have a lot of negative self talk and pressure to succeed or else. I am about to start my first acting role and have been overthinking it. I am going to use your resource to support me. As I read, I was already planning how to use the activities, reflections and practices. The guide hits the mark.'

Nicole Glasson

Senior Program Officer/Social Worker, Services Australia

'I really love this resource. The questions are values-led and recognise leadership beyond titles or traditional concepts. It will be a valuable reflective tool for aspiring and early-career social work leaders.'

Meet the author

Hi, I’m Jody, a social work leader, coach and wellbeing consultant with over 35 years’ experience across frontline, academic and national executive roles. I have supported hundreds of social workers navigating complex systems, and I have seen what happens when care comes at a cost.

This guide is one small offering within a bigger mission: to equip social work leaders to lead from the inside out, without losing themselves in the process.

What my readers say about From Burnout to Balance

The bonus reflection is great – the manifestation of who you want to be as a leader, identifying existing strengths and any roadblocks to success. I really appreciate this. I feel like I am good at reflecting, but these are prompts that I wouldn’t necessarily ask myself and I can see how by using these prompts regularly, it will keep the person’s leadership evolution moving forward.

I absolutely loved your resource. The exercises were beautifully evidence-based, but achievable to incorporate into a day. I loved that there was blank space at the end for people to share and swap their own strategies This sounds strange, but the colours and language made me feel seen and comforted, and reading it was a lovely break for my brain.

Medical Social Worker (Washington)

I really like how you include evidence to support and explain all your tips. I also think it flows really nicely from the shifts into how this can be applied in action, and the templates for reflection are a useful tool too.

Sophie

Team Leader, Community Service

I find the five shifts are workable and relevant to our everyday practice. I use micropause (sometimes a few minutes of a screen break) as a third space between tasks and this has worked well for me. In addition to standing up, breathe and reset posture, I also use this micro pause to have water/tea and is a small thing that supports physical/mental resilience.

I snipped your LinkedIn update about Social Work values and shared with a SWO graduate I am mentor for. She's been talking to me about our system not matching her Social Work values and really appreciated your story posted as it helped her know she's not alone in how she's feeling (and it helps me as a mentor have a bit of an evidence base to support that).

Onboarding into the Churchill Fellowship Journey

As I begin shaping my own Fellowship journey, I’m reminded that small shifts in how we show up as leaders ripple out in ways we can’t always see at the start.

Calling Social Workers Across the Globe

I’m honoured to have been awarded a Churchill Fellowship to explore how social workers across the world are being led and what enables them to stay well, stay connected, and stay in the profession long term.

What if retention, not recruitment, was our real strategy?

Too often, we talk about “self-care” as if it’s only an individual responsibility. But social workers cannot self-care their way out of broken systems.
